Do Your Thing!

Time to vent!

While shopping for supplies at a local craft store, I overheard a conversation in the next aisle. A woman appeared to be buying vinyl for her crafting machine when another customer approached her and said, “Don’t waste your time with vinyl! It was the biggest mistake I ever made. Now I use sublimation.” The woman explained that the machine had been a long-awaited gift. I then heard the other customer continue to discourage her before pushing a business card into her hand.

The whole interaction stayed with me because it felt like she was unfairly dismissing someone’s excitement. I know that I personally wanted to experience as many different types of mediums. I tried all the vinyls, sublimation, and DTF because we crafters keep working until we find our comfort zone.

Just A Gentle Reminder

That moment was a hard reminder of how delicate the creative spark really is. We’ve all been beginners, trying something new and hoping it sticks. Everyone’s creative journey is their own—what looks like a mistake or a limitation to an outsider is often just someone else’s necessary stepping stone, or even their source of pure joy.

When we jump in with unsolicited ‘advice’ or criticism, we aren’t helping; we’re just getting in the way of the messy, essential process of experimentation. Real growth happens when we have the freedom to make those mistakes for ourselves, find our own path, and build our own confidence, without letting someone else’s frustrations get in the way of our enthusiasm. Let’s protect that excitement instead of dimming it.
